Tata Steel has collaborated with CII Green Business Centre to develop a GreenPro framework, GreenPro Ecolabel, to manufacture steel rebars, a first of a kind initiative in India, that would help the steel sector reduce the carbon footprint while manufacturing steel products. GreenPro Ecolabel enables the end-users to make an informed choice about buying steel having the lowest environment impact. GreenPro certified products are also recognised in Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) green building rating system.

Climate disclosure was sought from 67 steel companies and only six steel companies are rated in the leadership band. This is Tata Steel’s highest-rating in last 3 years and this puts the Company amongst top six steel companies, globally. The latest rating released by CDP reaffirms the position of the Company on climate response.

Tata Steel has launched plans for a project to capture CO2 from its blast furnaces in IJmuiden, Netherlands, and transport it for storage in empty gas fields under the North Sea. The project would lead to a 30% reduction of CO2 from the steelmaking site. This project is part of Tata Steel's broader sustainability strategy to be CO2 neutral by 2050. The capture and storage of CO2 could make a significant contribution to this in a relatively short timeframe.

A virtual event hosted by WBCSD at New York Climate Week brought together representatives from leading businesses including Bayer, EDF, and the Tata group. The panel highlighted the major actions these organisations are taking to achieve the net-zero emissions goal by 2050 and critical policy enablers required to actualise this goal. Ms. Alka Upadhyay, AVP – Sustainability & Environment, Tata Sustainability Group was one of the speakers and highlighted the need for long-term measures to accelerate climate action.

The 14th edition of Tata Volunteering Week (TVW) a huge success!
 
Conducted amid the pandemic, the 14th edition of the Tata Volunteering Week was quite unique. The programme, which normally sees a lot of group activities and large-scale events had to be pivoted to adjust to the requirements posed by COVID-19. Therefore, we asked our volunteers to “Work from Heart” while being at home – a play on “WFH” which is among one of the most used acronyms over the past six months! 35 companies of the Tata group conducted more than 2,500 volunteering activities across 75+ cities, to support 250+ partners. The Tata Group has been recognized among the top 15 global sustainability leaders according to the GlobeScan SustainAbility Leaders Survey 2020. It is the only Asian company to be a part of this prestigious list.

The Tata group celebrates Tata Sustainability Month every year in June, to help embed sustainable thinking at its heart. In alignment with the World Environment Day 2020 theme, this year TSM is focused on Biodiversity. The month-long knowledge fest will showcase select case studies of programmes undertaken by various Tata companies for protecting and enhancing biodiversity. Plus, our colleagues will learn how they, as individuals, can do their bit to preserve and nurture biodiversity.

The Case for Retreat as a form of Disaster Risk Reduction

In the context of Disaster Risk Reduction, retreat provides an excellent adaptation option, enabling achievement of societal goals and letting communities choose actions most likely to help them thrive.
